Artificial Intelligence (AI) was once nothing more than a creation by science fiction writers, now it’s subtly implanted in our everyday life.

We have nothing to fear yet; it will be a long time before a robot uprising is possible but the evolution of AI is happening every day with exciting results.

How does it work?

AI continually learns from the data it collects, by using unique algorithms to analyse the data. With this information it can begin to make decisions and offer suggestions.

The History of AI

The first example of AI can be traced back to WWII with Alan Turing and the Enigma Machine. The British mathematician and code breaker, who not only came up with the idea, also created the Turing test. This is still used today, as a benchmark to determine a machine’s ability to “think” like a human. It was a few decades on from this that the potential for AI was realised by high-profile investors and physicists, like Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking. Now AI is abundant in the modern day. For example, if you’re not sure what to listen to during your workout, Spotify will create playlists based on your previous listening experience. You can ask Siri for today’s weather or recommendation on where to eat.

AI Fighting Cybercrime

One of the hottest topics in business right now is the threat of Cybercrime. New threats are occurring on a daily basis, so how do these security programmes keep up? A regular anti-virus is out of date as soon as it’s installed. These programmes are reactive rather than proactive and can only protect the viruses it knows about, so with new viruses appearing daily, you will find yourself at risk of “Zero Day attacks”. A new wave of security software has been created utilising AI to proactively protect your network. Intercept X by Sophos for example, uses AI to drive threat prevention to unmatched levels. It creates a deep learning neural network, an advanced form of machine learning, that detects both known and unknown malware without relying on signatures. This is just one of few programmes that will help keep you one step ahead of would be cybercriminals.

The future for AI

Who knows what the future holds for AI? Will we have robot butlers at our beck and call? With autonomous cars on the horizon, will driving be a thing of the past? All we know that there will be growing pains as AI technology evolves, but there is no limit for the potential positive impact it will have in the future.
