For example, if you have a business standard Local Area Network (LAN) and a highly populated data wiring scheme (CAT5/6) then Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) might be the solution for you.
Both Avaya and LG/Nortel have excellent systems which effectively add all the latest applications to your existing LAN via a telephony server. The advantages are numerous; unified communications bring together your desktop e-mail, address book, and customer database onto one platform.
This allows you to ‘pop' the details from your server on the PC screen, dial from the screen, twin with mobiles, and have home workers or ‘road warriors' linked seamlessly to the office via the internet. Networking between offices is supported via the internet or existing data links. Along with a vast range of handsets to suit your requirements, VOIP based systems are the future for companies with heavy call content.
Pure VOIP based systems are not suitable for everyone. If you have a lot of basic extensions, or a lack of CAT5 data wiring where extensions exist, then a hybrid version from Avaya or LG/Nortel might be best. A mixture of both technologies can give you all the benefits for key personnel without the cost of rewiring the whole site. The system is stand-alone and will interface to your database directly. This excludes the requirement to attach to your LAN, therefore well placed for the less data intensive sites.
